As a child I remember my mom making soup from scratch. She started by simmering a large bone, from a ham, or beef roast, or using the carcass of a chicken or turkey. I also remember both my mom and grandma saving all the ends and skins from vegetables and then about every 10 days simmering this with some bones and using it as soup stock. That was many years ago, I left went off to college and created a life for myself. I hadn’t thought of these homemade broths for several years, however, recently I am seeing recipes for these types of broth on the rise. Little did I know how beneficial these broths are and how easy they are to make.
What is bone broth and where does it come from? Bone broth is a nutrient dense broth created from boiling various animal bones. To create a healthy and nutritious broth, you can use almost any bones. Chicken, beef, pork, fish, goat, turkey, elk, lamb or even buffalo bones will work.
Here are seven benefits of broth and the process my grandma, mom and I use to make delicious and nutritional broth.
1. Heal Your Gut
A cup a day works miracles for leaky gut syndrome and works well in protecting and preventing leaky gut syndrome. The gelatin in the bone broth (found in the knuckles, feet, and other joints) helps seal up holes in intestines. This helps cure chronic diarrhea, constipation, and even some food intolerances.
2. Protect Your Joints
Taking glucosamine supplements to help with joint pain has been common knowledge for years, but it turns out bone broth has glucosamine too. Unlike pills, the broth includes a host of other goodies that help keep your joints happy, healthy, and pain-free. For example, the chondroitin sulfate in bone broth has been shown to help prevent osteoarthritis.
3. Look Younger
Bone broth is a rich source of collagen. You have certainly heard of collagen in many beauty products, it has the ability to make your skin, hair and nails to look radiant.
4. Sleep Better & Improve Your Memory
The glycine in bone broth has been shown in several studies to help people sleep better and improve memory.
5. Stronger Bones
The phosphorus, magnesium, and calcium in the bones seeps out into the broth leaving you with the essential building blocks for healthy bones.
6. Economical
When taking the skin off onions, cutting off the roots and tops of vegetables, etc. keep these in a large plastic bag in your refrigerator. About every 8 – 10 days clean out your frigerator and add vegetables to the bag that are going bad. Then use these when making your bone broth.
7. Boost Your Immune System
Bone broth is one of the new “superfoods” .. although it’s not new at all, making broth from bones goes back for centuries. Bone broth will help strengthen your immune system. A recent Harvard study indicated some people with auto-immune disorders experienced a relief of symptoms when drinking bone broth, with some achieving a complete remission.
Bone Broth Recipe
Take the fat, skin, etc off the bones of a ham, bone from beef, or a chicken or turkey carcass. Place the bones in a large soup pan, adding all the vegetables you have saved in your refrigerator (make sure all the vegetables have been cleaned and discard any spoiled areas). Add 2 bay leaves and then cover the ingredients with filtered water so that the water is 1-2 inches above the ingredients. Allow the water to boil and then turn the heat down to simmer. Simmer the broth for 48 hours covered.
After 48 hours allow the broth to cool, then using a strainer, strain the broth discarding all the bones and vegetables. Store in the refrigerator and drink throughout the week. You can also use this broth when making soups, stews and sauces. A favorite of mine is using beef broth when making spagehetti sauce. The depth of flavor is incredible and you get the additional benefits from the broth.
For you vegetarians — omit the bones and simmer the vegetables for 24 hours. This will create an awesome vegetable broth you can drink and use in other recipes.
