5 Signs of a Weak Immune System

When we think of the organs and systems within our body, we often overlook the immune system – yet without this complex network of specialized tissues and cells your entire body would shut down. Your body has an innate desire to be well and to function optimally.  If you don’t believe me, think about when you accidently scratch yourself or get a cut – your body naturally and automatically starts the healing process. Your body works 24/7 to always optimize your health.

Is your immune system in top form? Do you have a weaken immune system? How do you know? Here’s five signs to look for and what you can do to boost your immune system.

1. Are you tired most of the day? 

Getting too much sleep can be just as harmful as not getting enough. Ideally getting around seven hours of sleep every night will help to optimize your health and immune system. Get in the habit of going to bed and getting up at the same time every day. Fluctuation in the time you go to bed confuses the natural rhythm of your body. The last hour prior to going to bed listen to some soothing music, stop using electronics and dim the lights.

2. Do you get colds and the flu?

Make sure you are washing your hands several times a day. This includes before eating, after being outside, after shopping, etc. One of the ways colds, flu and other virus’ are spread is through the eyes, mouth and nose. Usually this is from germs being on your hands and then touching your face.

Eating natural, fresh, whole foods (non-processed) will also make a huge difference in the number of colds and flu you get throughout the year. Each meal get 50% vegetables, 25 – 30% protein and 20% health fats.

3. Do you suffer from indigestion or IBS?

There’s a saying, “You are what you eat.” In reality it’s more like, “You are what your body absorbs what you eat.” If you are experiencing indigestion, IBS, gas, bloating then your body is having a difficult time breaking down your food. If you body cannot breakdown the food, then the nutrients cannot be absorbed into the blood stream.

Find a good probiotic to take first thing in the morning with at least 8 oz of water. There are many brands and types of probiotics, it can be overwhelming. 4. Are you stressed out?

Stress is the number one cause of all illness and disease. Learning techniques to manage your stress and applying these techniques to your daily life will boost your immune system, assist your body in regaining it’s health and vitality and will help your body resist disease. Ways to reduce your stress include yoga, qigong, meditation as well as getting out in nature.

5. Does your body take a long time to heal?

Small scraps, cuts, bruises, etc. should not take more than a few days to heal. It’s important to keep the wound clean, there are a few supplements that can help with the healing process, including zinc and vitamin D. Going outside and sitting in the sun for about 10-15 minutes can help with eliminating infection and will allow your body to produce vitamin D. There are very few foods that have vitamin D in them, if you can’t be outside in the sun, you might want to consider taking a vitamin D supplement.
