3 Breath Techniques To Manage Stress, Part 3

October 27, 2015

BreatheDid you know that up to 90% of serotonin is produced in your gut?  … and up to 50% of dopamine is produced in the gut. This is one of the reasons why breath techniques work on calming the mind, reducing stress and creating harmony within your body. Continuing with this series on breath techniques in part three you will learn a powerful practice that will help you when you are feeling tired, sluggish and need to wake up the mind.  This literally works as well as a cup of coffee, yet much cheaper and without the caffeine. Enjoy!

Breath Technique #3: 3-Part Quantum Breath

This technique will leave you feeling energized and alert.

  1. Sit comfortably – without slouching.
  2. With the mouth closed, relax the face and jaw.
  3. Begin to inhale through the nose, breathing into the low abdomen area.
  4. Continue to breathe filling up the ribcage – feel it expand.
  5. Continue to breathe filling up the chest – feel it expand.
  6. Think of filling up a cup of water – first the bottom, then the middle, then the top.
  7. When you get to the very top of the inhalation, hold the breath for 3 counts.
  8. Then with pursed lips begin to exhale very, very slowly, as slow as you possibly can.
  9. Continue to exhale until you completely empty the lungs… NOTE: Your mind may play a trick on you, telling you that you are at the end of the exhalation. Continue to exhale. You may be surprised by how much more air is still in the lungs.  Don’t force anything and there should not be any pain or discomfort. Go at your own pace.
  10. Repeat two times (total of 3 rounds).
  11. Then go back to your natural breath.

Repeat the sequence 3 times.

NOTE: If you become dizzy – back off, your body is not use to this deep breath work. Continued practice will allow you to breathe very deeply and exhale at a very, very slow rate.  This technique is excellent for bringing in a great deal of energy into the body and releasing toxins with the slow exhalations.

Do this breath in the morning upon waking up, it also works well when you feel tired or sluggish.
